We are thankful to have it, even if it isn't glorious.
During the Great Depression, folks made some pretty interesting food concoctions not out of novelty, but out of pure necessity. I just read an interesting blog post about some of these recipes, here.
While some ideas listed there are probably not going to make our challenge, I will say that I have had a few of them, and can say that they are not that bad--dare I say pretty good:
Chipped beef on toast
Dandelion salad
Hot dogs and baked beans
One eyed Sam – piece of bread with an easy over egg in the center
Fried potatoes and hot dogs
Cornbread in milk
Creamed corn/peas/mixed vegetables on toast
Squirrel
Rice in milk with some sugar
Beans
Boiled cabbage
American cheese sandwich
Fried egg sandwich with mustard
Have you had any Great Depression meals lately, or any frugal favorites to share with us?
